Argentina’s Personal lunches 3G service in Rosario

October 6, 2007

Personal, a subsidiary of Telecom Argentina Group, has launched 3G services in the city of Rosario, reports BNamericas, quoting a company statement.

In May this year the firm launched W-CDMA/HSDPA services in a limited area of Buenos Aires, followed by a launch in the city of Cordoba in August. Personal is in the process of expanding 3G coverage in Buenos Aires.

According to the statement, the operator expects to invest ARS500 million (USD158 million) on a 3G rollout by the end of 2009, by which time it is aiming to have signed up one million UMTS subscribers. Rival cellco Movistar Argentina launched a commercial 3G offering, also featuring HSDPA, in Buenos Aires in July.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Movistar was the leading cellco by subscribers at the end of June 2007, with nearly 12.3 million customers, followed by CTI Movil with just under 11.7 million. Personal was third with 9.9 million. CTI has yet to launch 3G services, but has earmarked investment for the purpose.
