LG Telecom Wins a IMT-2000 License

The South Korean government announced a operator for the 3G IMT-2000 wireless licenses based on Qualcomm's CDMA2000 technology after it was put off due to lack of qualified bidders.

The sole candidate, LG Telecom has won the country's third and last 3G licenses on Saturday, comprising of 1,049 companies.

The license cost $898million for the licensing fee in installments over the next 15 years and will have to invest $420 million in the network systems.

LG Telecom is the country's smallest wireless service provider and analysts cast doubt if LG Telecom can complete with the two giants.

The government already awarded two licenses to SK Telecom Korea Telecom last December. The two telecom giants will use the W-CDMA technology favoured by NTT DoCoMo and Nokia. The country is keen to implement both W-CDMA and CDMA2000 technologies.

Earlier this week, LG Telecom's bid for an alliance with a foreign partner collapsed, casting a dark cloud over the funding for a large-scale capital investment needed to set up 3G service networks.
