J-Phone 3G launch lacks handsets

December 27, 2002

A lack of 3G handsets has hit the launch of the Vodafone group Japanese unit J-Phone. It was reported that only 150 handsets were available on the launch day last Friday and another 800 handsets were shipped on Tuesday.

It was confirmed that only 31 of the 1929 retail stores nationwide had 3G handsets to sell on launch. Retailers are facing confusion over the situation, as they haven't any idea on when the handsets will arrive.

Only handsets supplied by NEC were available during the launch. Additional handsets would be shipped before the end of the year but may not reach the shelves before the New Year. Two other expected suppliers, Sanyo and Nokia, will most probably release their handsets in the New Year.

J-Phone is not troubled with the problem and expected a slow start to its service when they announced its 3G plans early this month.

The operator is targeting Japanese overseas travellers with its roaming service and dual mode WCDMA/GSM handsets. Users would then be able to use their phones in selected countries with GSM mobile networks.
