Siemens to set up UMTS network for Amena in Spain - Order volume € 460 milliondate: 19th March 2001, source by: The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group has been selected by Spanish mobile operator Amena as supplier for its UMTS Network. The contract runs over a period of five years and is worth €460 million. Siemens IC Mobile will set up more than 3,000 UMTS base stations for Amena’s mobile radio network and install the corresponding core network which will support both voice and data applications. In 2001 Siemens plans to deliver more than 500 base stations, with the first configurations ready to use in August. This network will enable users of mobile devices to reach substantially higher data rates access multimedia services anywhere at any time. In addition to this implementation of the infrastructure for its 3G (third generation) mobile network, Amena has also chosen Siemens IC Mobile for the roll-out of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) technology, valued at €11 million. This technology enables the use of new data services which will continually develop and become very important with the introduction of UMTS. The new contracts come as a result of the successful cooperation of Amena and Siemens IC Mobile in the GSM sector. In 1998 Siemens started implementing a full turnkey GSM 1800 network for Amena, securing the Spanish mobile provider’s excellent market position. Within a period of two and a half years Siemens delivered and implemented more than 4,000 base transceiver stations (BTS).
