SonyEricsson delay Z1010 launch again to early 2004
September 09, 2003
According to a news report on Friday, SonyEricsson will launch its clamshell
Z1010 dual mode WCDMA 3G mobile phone in January 2004 for Hutchison's
UK 3G network.
The new video phone, optimised for video calling and video applications,
was scheduled to be launched just before Christmas but unexpected technical
problems caused the delay. A spokesman from SonyEricsson said the phone
is undergoing the final testing phase.
A source told 3GNewsroom.com that the Z1010 is suffering heavy drop calls
when making video calls to other manufacture's 3G phones, but is working
successfully when video calling between Z1010 handsets.
Users of the recently launched Motorola A920 video phone on Hutchison's
UK 3G network are also having similar experiences with heavy drop video
calls to other manufacture's video phones (NEC e606 and e808) on the same
network.
The Z1010 is the most eagerly awaited phone in the 3G handset market
and could give a boost to Hutchison's subscriber level, which has suffered
from a lack of handsets and poor built quality. Critics have said the
Z1010 is pack with advance features not found in any other mobile phones
and the design is comparable to Nokia's sleek design.
The Z1010 features two in-built cameras for capturing still images and
videos, which can then be sent as MMS or email. It has two displays, the
main display is a 65K colour display and a grey scale status display is
located on the front panel of the phone for easy access to information
when the phone is closed.
3G phones currently offered by Hutchison have been criticised for begin
bulky, but the launch of the Z1010 should see a new design shift in handset
looks i.e. smaller and lighter. In comparison with the popular NEC e606
on Hutchison's 3G network, the Z1010 is an improvement in size and weight.
