Connex makes first video calling over 3G in Romania

September 30, 2004

Connex is pleased to participate, together with Ericsson and Siemens, in the first demonstration of video calling using 3G technology in Romania.

"We are proud to present the first video call in Romania, based on 3G technology. It shows the readiness of our network and represents an opportunity to assess the Romanian market's interest for next generation services. Video calling over 3G is just one way that Romanians will be able to have a more enhanced communications experience in future. We are committed to continually developing interesting and practical ways of communicating, whether that be through voice, picture messaging or through a full moving video experience", said Ted Lattimore, President and COO, Connex.

"Siemens has repeatedly stated its readiness to implement UMTS on the Romanian market as the following level in the evolution of telecommunication infrastructure. Therefore, Siemens will use the opportunity to prove that this technology is really the standard for third generation communications.", according to Adrian Baicusi, General Manager of Siemens S.R.L.

"The first 3G call in Romania is enlarging Connex's "first on air" portfolio and marks another milestone in the successful partnership with Ericsson over the last 8 years", said Janos Fugedi, Country Manager Ericsson Romania.

The trial performed over the Connex network is the first live UMTS demo in Romania presenting video telephony and data transfer at 384 kbps. It is performed inter-cities (Bucuresti, Cluj, Brasov, Craiova, DN 1), inter-technology (GSM - UMTS) and inter-vendors (Ericsson - Siemens) and it is meant to check the interoperability between different network segments corresponding to different equipments.

Connex intends to participate in the 3G bid process, following the tender announcement made by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

Connex has 4,089,948 mobile customers in Romania, as of June 30, 2004. Connex's major shareholders are Telesystem International Wireless, Canada, and Vodafone, UK.
